Otto says "Upgrade to Max or Pro" or "your organization has disabled Claude subscription access" - but I already pay for Claude

Modified on Tue, 4 Aug at 1:28 PM

You went to get Otto working and the sign-in refused you. Either the Claude page offers you nothing except Upgrade to Max or Pro with no way past it, so it won't let me use my existing Claude account is exactly how it feels, or an error landed in chat and your first move was to screenshot it and write in with Otto is showing me this message: Your organization has disabled Claude subscription access for Claude Code - Use an Anthropic API key instead, or ask your admin to enable access. Both screens hit hardest on people who are already paying for Claude, and neither one explains itself. You are right to be annoyed.

The two sentences we hear most

The performers who wrote in about this said it better than we could. One of them: I get this when trying to log in. I already have the pro Claude account, it isn't giving me the option to use my current account. The other, after sending us a screenshot of his own billing page: I don't understand what is going on because since I bought Booked Solid I use claude paid ($20 a month). Both were already paying. Neither one needed to spend another cent, and neither one had anything wrong with their Booked Solid license.

Neither message is about your Booked Solid license

Both of these come from Claude, the service Otto's thinking runs on. Neither comes from Otto, and neither has anything to do with your license or your payment to us.

Here is the root cause the two screens share. Claude's sign-in page silently uses whichever Claude account your browser is already signed into, and it gives you no account picker. It never asks. So if the browser happens to sit on a different Claude account than the one your paid plan is on, Claude either tells you to upgrade or tells you that you are blocked. The page never offered you a choice in the first place, which is why it reads as though your real account has been ignored.

Paying more does not fix either one.

Should I buy Claude pro here? Will it know I already have it?

No, and do not buy a second plan. One paid Claude plan is all Booked Solid ever needs, and we neither sell nor resell Claude. The upgrade offer looks like the only way forward because Claude cannot see your plan while it is looking at the wrong account. Once the correct account is the one signed in, that same page stops offering an upgrade and shows an Authorize button instead, and the plan you already pay for is recognised with nothing to link, match or re-buy.

Run this check first: which Claude account did Otto actually get?

Before you change anything, find out which account the browser handed over. This one check decides which fix below is yours.

  1. Open a new browser tab and go to claude.ai. Sign in the way you normally do.
  2. Click your name or initials in the bottom-left corner, or open Settings. It shows the email address you are signed in as. That is the account Otto grabbed.
  3. Now click your name or initials in the top-left corner. That shows the workspaces this sign-in belongs to. If more than one is listed (a company one and a personal one, for example), that is the tell: your sign-in sits in two places at once and Otto landed in the wrong one.
  4. Open Settings > Billing (claude.ai/settings/billing). It should name the paid plan you pay for: Pro for most performers, Max for heavy daily use. If it names no paid plan at all, this browser is signed into a different account than the one you pay for.

Note down which email address your paid plan is actually on. The rest of this article turns on that one fact.

Symptom A: the sign-in page only offers "Upgrade to Max or Pro"

What it means: the account the browser handed over is not the one your paid Claude plan is on. Almost certainly it is a free Claude account that this browser happens to be logged into. That is also why there is no option to pick a different account on the screen. The page quietly used the one that was already signed in.

Do not click Upgrade to Max or Pro on that screen. It would start a brand new second subscription on top of the plan you already pay for, and it would not solve anything.

If you already clicked it, you are fine and there is nothing to undo. That button opens a payment page and does nothing else. You are billed only if you actually enter a card and confirm the purchase. Close the page and carry on with the steps below.

  1. Open a new browser tab and go to claude.ai.
  2. Look at the bottom-left corner, or open Settings, to see the email you are signed in as.
  3. If that is not the email your paid plan is under, sign out, then sign back in with the correct one: the address that pays for your Claude plan. If you sign in with Continue with Google, watch the Google account picker and choose the right account there, because it will often reuse the last one without asking.
  4. To be certain, open Settings > Billing (claude.ai/settings/billing). It should name your paid plan, Pro or Max.
  5. Go back to Booked Solid and click Sign in now (or Try again). That same page now shows an Authorize button where the upgrade offer used to be.
  6. Click Authorize. If the browser hands you a code at the end, copy it, paste it into Paste your sign-in code in the app, click Continue, then I'm signed in.

Symptom B: "Your organization has disabled Claude subscription access for Claude Code"

The full message is Your organization has disabled Claude subscription access for Claude Code - Use an Anthropic API key instead, or ask your admin to enable access.

If you pay for personal Claude Pro, work for nobody, and have no admin, that sentence reads like an accusation about something you have never heard of. It is not about your payment and it is not about a company you work for.

In Claude's world, organization means the workspace your Claude sign-in sits inside, and one sign-in can sit in more than one workspace at the same time: a plain personal one, and an organization one.

Here is the part that catches people. When you sign in to Claude with a business or custom-domain email address (info@yourdomain.com, for example), Claude quietly files that sign-in under an auto-created organization for that domain. Claude Code, the part Otto does its thinking with, has its own on and off switch per workspace, and for those auto-created domain organizations that switch starts turned off. So Otto lands in the domain workspace where the switch is off, instead of in your paid personal one. Your Pro plan is untouched the whole time.

Two fixes, best first. Both of these keep Otto's Gmail drafting working:

  1. If your paid plan is on a personal address, point Otto at that account. If the plan is on a personal address such as a Gmail rather than on the domain address, sign your browser into that personal account, then make the app sign in again using How to point Otto at a different Claude account below. There is no new cost, and a personal account has no domain organization sitting in the way, so Claude Code is on there by default.
  2. If the organization is your own, turn Claude Code back on. If the plan is on your own custom-domain address and you own that domain, the message's ask your admin to enable access means ask yourself. Sign in at claude.ai as the owner of that organization, open the organization's settings, and re-enable Claude Code (Code access) for members. Then fully quit Booked Solid and open it again - a real quit and relaunch, not a window close. Otto runs again with nothing else to change.

The Anthropic API key the message suggests, and what it really costs

The error itself proposes a third route: Use an Anthropic API key instead, or ask your admin to enable access. The key does work, and Otto will run on it. Two honest warnings before you take it.

  • When Otto runs on an Anthropic API key, the Gmail connection and the other connections that run through your claude.ai account switch off. That is a rule on Claude's side, not a Booked Solid choice, and the app says so on the Connections tab. If Otto was drafting a Gmail reply when this hit you, the key breaks exactly the thing you were doing.
  • A key bills you per use, on top of the Claude plan you are already paying for.

One thing that does not break: the mail and calendar accounts you added inside the app under Connections > Mail & calendars keep working either way, because they never depended on the Claude sign-in. It is the claude.ai account connections that go dark. Take the key route only if you do not need those.

How to point Otto at a different Claude account

Signing into the right account in your browser is only half the job. The app keeps its own sign-in, separate from your browser, so the app has to sign in again before anything changes. One honest limit while you are here: there is no screen in the app today that tells you which Claude account Otto is using or switches it with one button. The route below is the manual one, and it is the same door the app uses when a sign-in expires.

Do this after your browser is signed into the correct Claude account:

  1. Above the message box, click Power view. It sits next to Chat.
  2. In the top right of the terminal area, click the small Power-user view link. The app rechecks your sign-in.
  3. If a screen titled One quick sign-in appears, click Sign in now and finish signing in with the correct Claude account in the browser.
  4. If a terminal session opens instead, type /login in the typing box and press Enter, then finish the browser sign-in the same way.
  5. If the browser shows a code at the end, copy it, paste it into Paste your sign-in code back in the app, click Continue, then I'm signed in.
  6. Click back to Chat and ask Otto again.

To see which Claude account Otto is on without changing anything, open Power view, type claude and press Enter, then type /status and press Enter. The account line names it.

What will not fix this

These are the things people burn an evening on. Skip all of them.

  • Buying Claude Pro or Max again. A second subscription on the wrong account leaves you blocked and out another $20 or $100 a month. In both of the support threads behind this article, the customer already had the right paid plan.
  • Signing in again with the same account. For Symptom B especially, repeating the sign-in with the account that is already blocked puts you back in the same blocked workspace. Either the account has to change, or that organization's Claude Code switch has to change. This is where this article differs from Otto says 'Failed to authenticate' or a 401 error: a 401 means the sign-in expired and the same account fixes it, while here the account itself is the problem.
  • Re-entering your Booked Solid license code, or reinstalling the app. Neither message is a Booked Solid error. Your leads, your history and your license are not involved.
  • Reconnecting Gmail or Google in the app. Your mail connection and your Claude sign-in are separate things. Relinking mail cannot reach the Claude sign-in, and the Claude sign-in is what is stuck.

If it still will not go through

If claude.ai shows your paid plan on the account you expect, the workspace list shows only the account you want, Claude Code is enabled for that workspace, and the app still throws the upgrade wall or the organization message, stop there and hand it over rather than paying for anything. Submit a ticket from this help center with three things: a screenshot of the exact screen you are stuck on, the email address your paid Claude plan is on, and whether that address is a personal one or a custom-domain one. Those three together tell us which account the app really grabbed, and that answer usually decides the fix in one reply.
