Mac says the app cannot update: the "move the app" message explained

If your Mac shows a message asking you to move Booked Solid into your Applications folder, this article explains why it appears and how to fix it in under a minute. Once the app lives in Applications, updates arrive on their own from then on.

Why you see this message

Booked Solid quietly checks for a newer version every time you open the installed app. On a Mac, that update check refuses to run when the app is launched from the wrong place:

  • Straight from the downloaded installer (the mounted disk image you double-clicked)
  • From your Downloads folder or anywhere else that is not Applications
  • From a quarantined copy macOS created when you opened it (macOS sometimes runs a fresh download from a temporary location)

In all of these cases, updating would only update a disposable copy, not the app you actually use. So instead of failing silently, Booked Solid shows: Move Booked Solid into your Applications folder, open it from there, then check again. This keeps updates on the copy you actually use. Windows and Linux installs are never affected by this.

The fix: move the app to Applications

  1. Quit Booked Solid.
  2. Open Finder and drag Booked Solid into your Applications folder (the one inside your home folder also works).
  3. If you still have the installer disk image open, eject it.
  4. Open Booked Solid from Applications.

That is it. From now on the app checks for updates at every launch and downloads them in the background.

The update badge and installing an update

You do not need to press anything to get updates. When the quiet updater has news, a small badge appears near the logo at the top of the app: Getting update means a newer version is downloading and you can keep working, and Update ready means it is ready to install. Click the badge, or use the Check for updates button in the top bar, then press Restart & install. The app restarts on the new version.

Good to know

  • Updates replace only the app itself. Your BookingHQ workspace, settings, and saved keys are never touched.
  • If Restart & install does nothing, the failure is recorded in the app's log file. Email support and include a support bundle so it can be traced.
Prefer a fully managed experience? Booked Solid OS runs on your computer and you stay hands-on. If you would rather have this handled for you on a hosted platform (lead finding, follow-ups, email sending, invoicing, all managed in one place), take a look at KM Hub from the same team.
