The Mac download will not start, or the downloaded app will not open (including "my Mac is too old")

Modified on Tue, 4 Aug at 7:09 PM

You clicked the Mac download link and nothing useful happened. In one customer's words: "hello when i try to download the mac version its not allowing me to download." Or the file did save, and double-clicking it goes nowhere. People describe it as it won't let me download, the download won't start, or the app won't open on my Mac, and there is a third version nobody wants to hear: my Mac is too old. All of it is covered here, in the order these causes actually turn out to be.

Before you try anything, one thing that saves you an hour: the download link itself is fine. booked.kivimedia.co/download/mac is live and serves the latest signed build. Re-sending yourself the link, clearing your cache, or waiting for us to fix a broken link will not change anything, because there is nothing broken on our end. The cause is on the Mac side. Work down the three below in order.

Cause 1: your browser blocked the download

The most common version of "it will not let me download" is that the file never got saved at all, because the browser quietly refused it. Browsers do this to apps they have not seen many people download yet. The notice is small and easy to miss, which is why it looks like the click simply did nothing.

Safari

  1. Look near the address bar for a small download arrow, or a short note saying the download was blocked or stopped.
  2. Click it, then choose Allow or Keep.
  3. The file saves to your Downloads folder. Go to Cause 2 below.

Chrome

  1. Look at the warning bar along the bottom of the window.
  2. Click Keep.
  3. The file saves to your Downloads folder. Go to Cause 2 below.

If you get no Keep or Allow option at all, use a different browser. Open booked.kivimedia.co/download/mac in whichever of Safari, Chrome or Firefox you are not already using. That alone usually gets the file. Always grab a fresh copy from the download page rather than an old link from an old email, because the page always serves the newest build.

Cause 2: it downloaded, but the app will not open

If the file did save, the problem moves to how it is being opened. What follows is also the correct install path, so walk it even if you are fairly sure you did this already. Opening it from the wrong place is one of the usual causes of the "nothing happens" reports.

  1. Open the downloaded disk image from your Downloads folder. It is named BookedSolid-mac.dmg, or a name that starts with BookedSolid and ends in .dmg.
  2. A window opens showing the Booked Solid icon next to an Applications folder shortcut.
  3. Drag the Booked Solid icon onto the Applications folder and wait for the copy to finish.
  4. Eject the disk image: in Finder, click the eject icon next to the mounted Booked Solid item in the sidebar. You can then delete the .dmg file from Downloads.
  5. Open Booked Solid from your Applications folder or from Launchpad. Not from the .dmg window, and not from Downloads.

It is easy to open the app straight from the .dmg window instead, because it is sitting right there and it appears to work. It is a dead end. The app runs, but it is running from a mounted disk image it does not own, so later updates cannot install and you get sent back here in a month. Drag it into Applications first, every time.

The first open

  1. The first time, macOS may ask you to confirm that you want to open an app downloaded from the internet. Click Open.
  2. If macOS blocks the app instead of offering an Open button, right-click (or Control-click) the Booked Solid icon in Applications, choose Open, then click Open in the dialog that appears.
  3. If that still does not give you a way through, go to System Settings > Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.

This confirmation only happens once. After that, Booked Solid opens like any other app.

If it says "Booked Solid is damaged and can't be opened"

That exact wording is not the ordinary unknown-developer warning, and Open Anyway will not fix it. It means macOS quarantined the download, which usually happens when the .zip was used instead of the .dmg. Use the .dmg from the download page. If the app is already in Applications, open Terminal and run xattr -cr "/Applications/Booked Solid.app", then open it normally. The fuller version of this, along with the other reasons a freshly installed app shows no window, is in the troubleshooting article I installed it and nothing happens.

Cause 3: your Mac is too old

If the first two did not apply, this is usually it on an older machine. Booked Solid needs a reasonably recent macOS. An old one can refuse the download before it ever saves, or save the file and then refuse to run the app, which is exactly why this looks identical to the first two causes from the outside.

To check which macOS you are on: Apple menu > About This Mac. The version is on the top line. Write it down, because it is the one piece of information that ends this conversation.

Now the blunt part. If your Mac cannot update far enough, the desktop app will not install or run on it. There is no setting that gets around it. We would rather tell you that than send you round the first two causes for another week.

We are not printing a minimum macOS number here, because we do not yet have one we have confirmed well enough to put in writing. Send us the top line from About This Mac and we will tell you for certain whether that Mac can run it, in one reply.

Two things people ask next

There is no iPhone app and no offline version you can use while the Mac is out of action. Booked Solid is a desktop app for Mac, Windows or Linux, it needs an internet connection, and Otto does its thinking through Claude online. The phone companion is not a stand-alone app either: it is a private window onto your own desktop, so it still needs that computer powered on and running Booked Solid in the background.

The replacement machine does not have to be a Mac. One page, booked.kivimedia.co/download, covers Windows, Mac and Linux, and your login, license, leads and history all carry over. There is nothing to re-buy.

Why Applications matters: the "move the app" message

Booked Solid updates itself quietly in the background, but on a Mac it can only replace its own files when it is running from the Applications folder. If you launch it from the .dmg window or from Downloads, the update window will show a message asking you to move the app to Applications instead of installing the update.

If you ever see that message:

  1. Quit Booked Solid.
  2. Drag the app from wherever it currently lives into Applications (if you are still running from the .dmg, drag the icon from that window).
  3. Eject the disk image if it is still mounted.
  4. Reopen Booked Solid from Applications. Updates now install normally.

Moving the app never touches your work. Your leads, files, and settings are stored separately and stay exactly where they were.

Sign in or activate

On first launch you will see the account screen. If this is your first time, click Enter your license key and paste the key from your license email (it looks like BS-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX), then enter your email and pick a username and password. Returning users sign in with the username and password they already have.

If none of that worked

Submit a ticket from this help center and tell us two things, and we can usually give you the exact next step on the first reply:

  1. What exactly happens when you try. An error message, or just nothing at all? If there is a message, copy the wording or attach a screenshot of it.
  2. Which macOS you are on. Apple menu > About This Mac, top line.

Those two answers separate a blocked download from an old machine faster than anything else, and they are the difference between one reply and five.
