Which version am I running - and why the app says "you're up to date" when it isn't (download and install the current app by hand)

Modified on Tue, 4 Aug at 12:33 PM

You click Check for updates, the window says "You are already on the newest version", and the fix you were promised is nowhere in your app. Or you wrote in to tell us "my app won't update", or "I have 1.7.5 when checking for updates its telling me i have the newest version", or "my system did not update the new version automatically. can you send it to me please". You are not misreading anything. There are two completely separate reasons the app can honestly report that you are current when you are not, and both end the same way: you sit on an old build while every release passes you by. This article shows you how to read your real version number, which of the two is happening to you, and the permanent download links so you never have to ask where do I download it again.

First: how do I check what version I have

Read the number before you try anything else. Nothing below this section is worth doing until you know it, and support cannot help you properly without it.

  1. Open the app and click Settings in the right-hand pane.
  2. Stay on the General tab and scroll all the way down, past Support logging, to the Updates and About blocks at the very bottom.
  3. The line reads "You're running Booked Solid" followed by your version number. That number is the truth about your install.

If you would rather ask than scroll, click Help me in the top bar and ask which version you are on. The Help buddy reads the real version out of your running app, so its answer is never a guess.

The rule that saves the most time: never retest a fix until that number confirms it. People have lost days retesting a bug on a build that never actually changed. If the number did not move, the fix is not in your app yet, whatever the update window told you.

Cause A: stuck on 1.7 and told you are current forever

Look at the first two parts of your number.

  • 1.8 or higher: your updater is pointed at the right place. Skip down to Cause B.
  • Anything starting 1.7, or older, while the update window insists you are current: this is you. Do not troubleshoot anything else until this is fixed. 1.7.5 and below is the common case, and as a rule of thumb support treats anything below roughly 1.7.13 as certain.

Here is what is really going on. Your copy is a build from before Kivi Media took over Booked Solid, and its updater is still checking the old update server. That server has nothing newer to offer, so the app truthfully reports that you are up to date against the wrong shelf while every new release passes it by: the pipeline board, the connection fixes, the sign-in fixes, all of it. That is the whole story behind "it says I am up to date but I am not": it says I have the newest version while the number in About has not moved in months.

Almost everyone clicks Check for updates again at this point, and it is a dead end. It will never fix this, no matter how many times you press it. Neither will restarting the app, waiting another week, or digging out the installer from your original purchase email. Skip all of that. One manual download from our server is the only thing that breaks the loop, and it breaks it permanently.

So how do I download the latest version

These links always serve the newest published build, so they never go stale. Bookmark the one that is yours.

Install it right over your current copy. Do not uninstall first. The whole thing takes about a minute, and if you are unsure whether you even need it, download and install anyway: it never hurts.

Windows

  1. Run the downloaded .exe.
  2. If the blue Windows protected your PC screen appears, click More info, then Run anyway. There is a fuller walkthrough in "Install Booked Solid on Windows" in this folder.
  3. Open the app and sign back in if it asks.

Mac

  1. Quit Booked Solid completely first with Cmd+Q. The red close button is not enough: it leaves the app running, and the swap cannot happen underneath a running app.
  2. Open the downloaded .dmg and drag Booked Solid into Applications, choosing Replace when asked.
  3. Reopen it from Applications, not from the disk image.

Linux

Install it the same way you installed Booked Solid the first time. On Linux the update window may tell you that updates are managed by your Linux package for this install, which is its way of saying it cannot swap itself in: on those installs the download link above is how you move to a newer version, every time.

One person who wrote in on 1.7.5 landed on 1.7.23 from that single download, and the app has kept itself current ever since. Another wrote back the same evening: "It says 1.8.1. And just updated to 1.8.2. All the nagging screens are gone." That is what a working updater looks like.

What carries over: everything

Two questions come up every single time, so here are the plain answers.

"So I need to use the link in this email to download the app again?" Yes, and that is the whole job. Your leads, your history, your setup, your license and your username all stay exactly where they are. You log in with the same username and password. It is the same app and the same code, only the newest version, now signed and updating itself from our channel.

"If I install from here will I miss out on some element or status or something that I would get by installing from the original emails?" No. Ignore the original purchase emails from the previous owner completely. Everything your purchase includes is tied to your license, not to which email the installer arrived in.

If you have bought but never installed at all, you are in the same position: "I bought before the original deadline but have not done the initial install yet. Should I go to my original emails to install?" Start from the download links above instead. The app opens on a license screen. Click First time here? Enter your license key, enter your BS-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX code with your email address, then pick a username and password. That becomes your login from then on.

Two harmless side effects of the switch

  • Windows: the first run may show the blue Windows protected your PC prompt from Microsoft SmartScreen. Click More info, then Run anyway. That happens because the app is newly signed, not because anything is wrong.
  • Mac: saved API keys and connections (Stripe, Apollo and the like) can stop reading as connected the first time the new build opens. What people describe as Needs reconnect after updating this way is your Mac keychain being properly strict about the new code signature, not a key that has been lost. On the Connections tab the card stops showing as connected and its button reads Needs its key again; a saved mail password instead gets a Needs attention note saying the password could not be unlocked on this machine and that this can happen after an update. Paste each key again once and it sticks.

How to prove the update landed

The version number in Settings > General is the definitive check. If you want a second, faster tell: open More > Connections and look under Tool access for the Gmail (app password) switch. That switch only exists on the newer builds. If you can see it at all, your update landed.

Cause B: the update downloaded but never installed itself

This is the other half, and it catches people who are already on 1.8 or higher. The built-in updater checks on every launch and pulls the new version down quietly in the background, but it only swaps the new build in on a full quit and relaunch. If you leave the app open, which most people do for weeks at a time, the finished download can sit there waiting indefinitely. That is why an install that has been running for a long time appears stuck on an old version even though the download completed, and it is the usual reason the app won't update on its own.

The order matters more than anything else here:

  1. Quit Booked Solid completely. Closing the window is not enough. On Mac use Cmd+Q. On Windows make sure it is gone from the taskbar and the tray.
  2. Reopen it and let it check. The app checks on every launch, so quitting and reopening is the standard way to pull an update early. If you prefer, click Check for updates in the top bar and use Restart & install when the window reaches ready.
  3. Read the number in Settings > General before you test anything.
  4. If the number is lower than the version you were told to install, do not go round the same loop again. Install fresh from https://booked.kivimedia.co/download over the top.

Nothing in this risks your work. Updates replace the app itself and never touch your Booking HQ, your leads, your settings or your license, which is why reinstalling over the top is always safe.

When the version you were told to install was never published

This one is on us, and it burned three people. If support told you a specific version number contained your fix and the bug is still there after you updated, check whether that build ever shipped. 1.11.23 and 1.11.24 both failed on the way out and were never published, so there was literally nothing for the app to update to. The people waiting on them updated in good faith, stayed on their old build, and correctly reported the bug as still present: "Nope. Still looping." and "I'm already on the new version." They were right both times.

The published build that genuinely contains those fixes is 1.11.25, and anything newer has them too. If you were pointed at 1.11.23 or 1.11.24 for the Library Radar county loop, the own-browser chat note and the Allow actions now button, or the file guard that lets Otto maintain the files it created, confirm 1.11.25 or higher in Settings > General before you retest.

If the update window shows an error

The error state means the check or the download itself failed. In this order:

  1. Close the update window, then quit and reopen Booked Solid. The app re-checks automatically on every launch, and a fresh start often clears a failed download.
  2. Click Check for updates again once the app is back up.
  3. Confirm your internet connection is working. If you are on a network that restricts downloads (office Wi-Fi, a VPN), try again from another connection.
  4. If it keeps failing, stop retrying and install by hand from the download links above. That path always works.

Mac only: the "move the app" message

If the update window asks you to move the app, it is running from the .dmg or from your Downloads folder, and the updater cannot replace its own files from there. Quit the app, drag it into Applications, eject the disk image if one is mounted, and relaunch from Applications. The full walkthrough is in "Mac says the app cannot update: the 'move the app' message explained" and in "Install Booked Solid on a Mac", both in this folder.

If it still will not update

If the symptom survives on a version number you have confirmed with your own eyes in Settings > General, that is a real bug and we want it. Send us the evidence rather than another description:

  1. In Settings > General, turn on Enable Support Logging.
  2. Reproduce the problem while it is on.
  3. Click Generate Support Bundle and save the file.
  4. Submit a ticket from this help center, attach the bundle, and tell us the exact version number you read.
